Natural News: The Thymus May Be the Key to Anti-Aging: How's Your Immunity

The Thymus May Be the Key to Anti-Aging: How's Your Immunity?

In 1982, the New York Times printed an article postulating that the Thymus Gland may be "the key to aging." Dr. Roy L. Walford of the University of California at Los Angeles had spent over a decade researching the connection between a shrinking thymus gland and aging. You may have never given your thymus gland much thought, but considering its crucial role in the body, this might be the best time to consider it.

The thymus gland is one of the principle glands for the autoimmune system. It is composed of two soft pinkish-grey lobes lying in a bib-like fashion just below the thyroid gland and above the heart. It is also known as the longevity gland. The thymus gland weighs less than half of an ounce at birth, but by puberty, the thymus will reach to its maximum size of about 10 ounces. After age 20, the thymus begins to shrink (atrophy) and thymic cells progressively die off to be replaced by fat and connective tissue.

The thymus produces T-lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell responsible for ”cell-mediated immunity.” This term refers to immune mechanisms not controlled or mediated by antibodies. Cell-mediated immunity is extremely important in resisting infection by mold-like bacteria: yeast, fungi, parasites, viruses, toxins and allergens. The function of the thymus gland is to program white blood cells, the body’s immune army, in their various tasks and then send them into the blood to recognize and destroy pathogens. T-cells come in 2 types: killer T-cells and helper T-cells. Killer T-cells detect germs or cancerous growths and destroy them. The helper T-cells create an immune response in the body, activating other immune cells and stimulating antibody production. The thymus ”instructs” T-cells what to attack and when. Without the thymus instructions, the T-cells may fail to attack enemies like bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, or they may even mistake some of your own cells for an invading enemy and attack you–known as autoimmune disease.  Examples of autoimmune disease are: multiple sclerosis, cancer, atherosclerosis, adult-onset diabetes, and rheumatic diseases such as arthritis.

At the critical early twenties stage, the abundance of well-functioning T-cells regulate the immune system and help the body fight off pathogens and disease. But with the inexorable shrinking of the thymus gland over time, by about age forty, the output of thymic hormones has decreased significantly, and the T-cells have begun to lose their effectiveness. It is this gradual loss of functioning T-cells that is thought to be responsible for many of the age-related changes in the immune system.

This is where our Thymus Gland comes in. Glandular therapy is useful if a patient’s endocrine system is under-producing or under-secreting a specific hormone. It can also be used when an organ is weak or diseased–for example, such is often the case with cancer patients. Because glandular therapy is generally effective for those diagnosed with a terminal illness, it is also recommended for preventative measures. Another principle behind the benefit of glandular therapy is that glandular tissues are rich in many nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, polypeptides, enzymes, and many other substances, and this is another reason why they work. The tissues work with all other products and foods you ingest. In this sense, glandular therapy can supply your missing essential nutritional needs in a highly efficient manner. For a tissue cell to repair or replace itself, it must have the raw materials to do so. Glandular therapy provides these raw materials to your weakened organs, glands, and other tissues so that they can start the process of regeneration.

Our Thymus Gland also has Vitamin B6 (P5P) and Zinc Picolinate. B6 deficiency has been linked to thymic atrophy and reduced antibody production, while increased B6 enables the body to absorb thymus hormones. Zinc is included because it is the keystone molecule for thymic proteins, which are immune substances made in the thymus gland – no zinc, no immunity.

What better way to boost your T cells than to strengthen the gland that supplies them? The paradox of Thymus Gland is that it is one of the most important organs for boosting our immune system and yet virtually unknown. If it were known, it would be selling like vitamin C. We may be the only company offering true full gland Thymus concentrates (not extracts) which are taken from New Zealand-raised, grass-fed sheep without hormones or antibiotics. This includes the brands specifically produced for the professional community; it just blows me away because it is so powerful, but not a part of everyone’s immunity program.

As we age, our bodies must fight harder and harder to maintain optimal performance. Products like Thymus Gland can ease the body's immunological load to help you age well.

Natural News: Antibiotics and Pregnancy

Antibiotics and Pregnancy

A report by the Canadian Medical Association Journal just released findings that certain types of antibiotics, when used in early pregnancy, are correlated to a higher risk of miscarriage. The classes specified are macrolides, quinolones, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and metronidazole. These classes include the following drugs:
  • Azithromycin
  • Clarithromycin
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Spiramycin
  • Telithromycin
  • Norfloxacin
  • Levofloxacin
  • Moxifloxacin
  • Ofloxacin
  • Doxycycline
  • Minocycline
  • Tetracycline
  • Demethylchlortetracycline
  • Clindamycin
  • Metronidazole
A study from the University of Montreal reached a similar conclusion about these classes of drugs, and recommended that policy-makers should update their guidelines for treating infections during pregnancy.

Due to changing hormones, urinary tract infections are common in pregnancy, and doctors usually prescribe antibiotics such as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and penicillin. Tetracycline, while also used for UTI's, is not usually prescribed because it can lead to liver problems and affect the developing baby's teeth.

When considering antibiotics, probiotics should be considered. Probiotics have many benefits, even in conception. Probiotics are normally taken orally but they can also be used as vaginal suppositories. Probiotics prevent the colonization of the vagina with yeast and harmful bacteria. When such infections do occur they can have a negative impact on sperm before they reach the female egg for fertilization.

Douching removes the normal bacterial flora in the vagina. These are mainly lactobacilli bacteria (i.e. probiotics) which help maintain the inner vagina in a healthy state.

The two pathogens actually invade together. When this happens, the inner vagina gets inflamed and becomes a very inhospitable environment for sperm, thus leading to infertility.

It is a good idea to replenish the vagina with good bacteria after treatment, a simple yet effective way is to insert the capsules into the vagina in order to reestablish the balance of bacteria.

And if antibiotics are taken, they should be combined with probiotics at different time periods of the day, between 6 to 8 hours after antibiotics are used. It is also recommended to continue with probiotics for 3 weeks after finishing the antibiotics.

Traditional shelf stable probiotics have FOSS as the prebiotic, and that form of prebiotic has a tendency of feeding both the good and the bad bacteria. Laktokhan®'s prebiotic is sourced from Chicory Root; depending on how chicory root is processed (naturally or chemically), it can be either FOS or Inulin directed. An “all-natural” means of extraction is used by Life Choice®. It produces long-chain fatty acids in the form of inulin. If a chemical extraction is used, a short-chain fatty acid is produced in the form of FOS. Inulin is the preferred choice because FOS can contribute to undesirable bacterial and yeast overgrowth.

Laktokhan® contains Inulin as the prebiotic, yet we must list fructo-oligosaccaride because there may be some residue of up to 5% FOSS (for example, some food groups state “may contain peanuts” when in fact no peanuts are present). Inulin and FOS are the means to the way both are processed and represented as Fructo-oligosaccharides are oligosaccharide fructans, both present in Chicory in a ratio of 80/20. The extraction process using water to separate the 2 components provides a final product with 95% Inulin and 5% FOS. The less expensive chemical extraction method is at least 80% FOSS and 20% Inulin.

Scientific testing is also important when selecting a probiotic. All the strains in Laktokhan® are scientifically tested; the same cannot be said for all probiotics, as an article in the Journal of Pediatrics observed:
Many over-the-counter probiotics now widely available in health food stores are neither reliable as products nor effective as remedies. They are sold under the general umbrella of 'probiotics' with disguised or sometimes overt claims. Sensible regulation of products and claims, as well as responsibility on the part of this industry, are sorely needed. In the area of probiotic research the hype, the misinformation, and the lack of regulation have blurred the line between scientifically acquired knowledge and anecdote or “pseudoscience.” But adequately designed and executed research in this field is finally sharpening our focus and should ultimately prevail.

Natural Ways to Lessen Hay Fever and Seasonal Allergies

Natural Ways to Lessen Hay Fever and Seasonal Allergies

Allergy season is quickly approaching. According to the AAFA, "Rhinitis may be caused by irritants or allergens (substances that provoke an allergic response). In response to these substances, the cells of the body release histamine and other chemical mediators. These are the substances that cause the symptoms of allergic rhinitis—sneezing, runny nose, and itching, watery eyes. In many people, rhinitis is a temporary condition that clears up on its own after a few days. In others, especially those with allergies, rhinitis is a chronic problem—one that is nearly always present or that recurs often." When nasal passages swell, an infection called sinusitis may also develop.

Antihistamines are generally what people reach for to avoid becoming a stuffy, sniffling mess. However, antihistamines are not without side effects. Some of the more common ones include:
  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Restlessness or moodiness (in some children)
  • Trouble peeing or not being able to pee
  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion
As is usually the case, there are natural products that can offer allergy relief, but without such disruptive side effects.

In Chinese medicine, Ephedra (also known as ma huang) goes back 5,000 years, although it was also utilized in other countries, such as India. Traditionally, Zen monks used doses of the Ephedra plant to aid in their meditation practice.

Today, in China, Ephedra is a popular treatment for chills and fever, as well as coughing and wheezing. In the West, Ephedra is more commonly used for respiratory disorders, such as asthma, hay fever, and cold/flu. Although an alkaloid of ephedra, ephedrine, was popular for weight loss purposes, it has been heavily regulated since then because it can be formulated to act as a precursor to methamphetamines (speed). As Mother Earth Living says, "The medicinal effects of pure ephedrine and pseudoephedrine should not be confused with the effects of ma-huang, just as you wouldn’t confuse the effects of pure caffeine with the effects of a cup of coffee."

Ephedra acts as a decongestant, aids in the proper elimination of fluids, and relieves bronchial spasms; these properties make it valuable to sufferers of allergies, asthma, colds, and other respiratory complaints. Ephedra "can shrink congested mucous membranes, helping to dry up the watery discharge and open the stuffed nasal passages which so often accompany the common cold or some flu. The alkaloid acts in similar ways to the body’s own stimulant, adrenaline, but is milder and longer-lasting and, unlike adrenaline, works orally."

Using the whole Ephedra herb is ideal, as more benefits can be gained with lower dosages. Also, side effects are rare, unlike with ephedrine. Any risks of Ephedra/ephedrine supplementation could be lowered by also supplementing with the amino acid L-Tyrosine. An essential building block for the production of Ephedra in the body, L-Tyrosine has been shown to boost the effects of Ephedra as much as 50%. Following this logic, this enables the dosage of Ephedra to be reduced by half, greatly reducing potential risk for anyone susceptible to Central Nervous System stimulation. The herb Ephedra remains highly effective in the treatment of respiratory complaints, and is recommended for those with allergies, asthma, or colds and congestion. Life Choice Ephedra is produced under our own rigorous standards of quality, and is fully approved by Health Canada.

We recommend Ephedra be taken with Colloidal Silver. Colloidal Silver, when inhaled, can help reduce inflammation in the sinuses. Life Choice Colloidal Silver is made without nanoparticles, in a 20 ppm electrically charged homeopathic formula. It is a clever combination of a time-tested antiseptic and disinfectant with a homeopathic method of preparation, producing an excellent remedy to fight bacterial infection and boost immunity.

The Disorder that Is Not Dementia

The latest news from Doctor's Choice!

The Disorder that Is Not Dementia

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a brain disorder that is oftenmistaken for dementia, even by doctors--but it is not dementia. And, thankfully, it is reversible. NPH is characterized by the build up of spinal fluid on the skull, which puts pressure on the brain. Treatment of NPH usually consists of surgery to drain the fluid. If diagnosed early, full memory function can be restored. The problem, though, is that too often, NPH is misdiagnosed as something more serious, and patients are left bedridden or in nursing homes. Unfortunately, a single standard of testing for NPH does not currently exist, but scientists are hopeful that supplemental tests can fill the gap for an accurate diagnosis, at least for the time being. The long-term outlook for treated NPH patients is positive, with an 87% success rate. Almost everyone who had two stent treatments experienced improvement in symptoms.

This is yet another example of the importance of a second opinion when given a grim medical prognosis. It could make all the difference in the treatment you are given. Our product Neurotransmitter Support has been helpful for multiple people with various head injuries. A University of Berkeley study found great potential for aging rats in the combination of acetyl-l-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid, and we began our formulation from this starting point.

Here are just a few of the testimonials we have received:

"I am writing this letter to let you know how pleased I am with your product Neurotransmitter Support. I suffered from a severe concussion in 2002 in which I hit the back of my head on the ice. It took two years for me to come around and many problems with it. In 2007 I started to have mini-strokes and continued to have many of them which affected my speech and was unable to comprehend much on a daily basis. I was introduced to Neurotransmitter Support March 3, 2016 at Treat Yourself Wellness Centre in Sarnia, ON. I can honestly say that I have phenomenally improved. I no longer suffer with mini-strokes, my thoughts are much clearer and I am able to keep a full conversation going. This product has definitely saved my life. My new husband to be has seen a big improvement in me and that makes me very happy. Thank you so much for offering such a great product which I will be using for the rest of my life." -Customer, Sandy A. from ON

"I was in an accident that caused a head injury. I was trampled by a horse and the damage I received was 3 skull fractures and 3 brain bleeds. I was unconscious for 15 min and I don’t have any memory from the first 4 days after my accident. I was in the ICU for 1 week and continued living at the hospital for 1 month in the rehabilitation section. I had a lot of trouble with short term memory, balance, dizziness and many other issues. I even had to learn how to walk again. I was stuck with a wheelchair and walkers to get around. I have an amazing family and they helped me every step of the way. Because of my family helping me and getting me 24/7 home care, I was able to get released from the hospital sooner than most people.  As soon as I got home we started looking at natural ways to help speed up the healing.  We got a bottle of the Life Choice Neurotransmitter Support from the health food store. Within a week I was starting to improve; and after taking a couple bottles, we could not believe how well I was doing. I’m now 6 months past my injury and the Neurologist can’t believe how well I am doing. Most people take up to a year or longer to get back to normal. I was able to go back to work part time when I was only 3 months after the accident; and I am able to walk alone and drive a car again. This product really improved my health." -Customer, Carrie M. from ON

As we discover new scientific insights, we must re-examine treatment modalities, for what may appear characteristically for one condition may be completely different. Single standard testing may group multiple health conditions, and the treatment used may not be specific to the patient's health condition, and in fact, may do further harm. When drugs are administered unnecessarily without targeting the actual core of the disease or disorder, the patient suffers, with a perfect example being NPH. A deeper evaluation and a second opinion should always be considered, and when brain injuries occur and memory is failing, it would be useful to first examine professionally produced natural medicine, such as the case with Neurotransmitter Support. The outcome may just save your life.
