DMAE is an amino acid found in food. Like all amino acids, it is quite powerful, but many don't realize just how powerful. DMAE is commonly found in fishy "brain foods" like sardines and anchovies. While some might relish the chance to feast on fish, others prefer the supplement route. The DMAE we use is very unique in the marketplace: it is classified as semi-synthetic, produced by fermentation process. Due to the delivery mechanism to the cells, the DMAE or the active deanol part comes from fish, mainly wild sardines. Then, it is fully reacted or bound with tartaric acid to produce DMAE bitartrate. Due to the tartaric acid binding, the product does not have a fishy odor. Instead, it is 100% bioactive to the cells for absorption.
The specific benefits of DMAE are both mental and physical. First, let's look at the mental benefits. In the late 1950's, Dr. Leon Oettinger, Jr. found that DMAE improved several factors crucial to learning, such as attentiveness, mental concentration and processing, and mood. Later studies seemed to confirm these findings. In one study, conducted by Dr. Carl Pfeiffer of the Brain-Bio Center, 25 girls and 83 boys were observed. DMAE was found to result in enhanced behavior in 2/3 of the boys and 3/4 of the girls. Hyperactivity was greatly lessened as attention span was lengthened, irritability was decreased, scholastic ability improved, and, in some cases, IQ was elevated. Another double-blind study supplemented 74 children who had learning disorders (many hyperactive) with 500 mg DMAE for 3 months. They were then tested for behaviour, reaction time, and put through a series of standard psychometric parameters. There was not only general improvement, but also performance improvement in the children with learning and behaviour disorders. A similar double-blind study of 50 moderately hyperkinetic children found that 300–500 mg of DMAE given daily for 12 weeks produced overall behavioral improvement.
The Brain-Bio Center also found that DMAE can help mood. In 100 subjects, the study concluded that DMAE can help alleviate chronic fatigue and mild depression through its effects on physical energy and motivation. Insomnia improvements were also noted--with no dependency on DMAE, as is often seen with drugs for similar conditions.
If you are considering using DMAE for mental enhancement, we recommend using it from age 12 and above. If the prescription drug approach to ADHD and autism has left side effects, we recommend talking to your health care provider about the benefits of DMAE.
If internal DMAE is brain fuel, external DMAE is skin fuel. DMAE applied externally can help with lines and wrinkles. A 2005 study found that topical DMAE applied daily for 16 weeks was "safe and efficacious in the mitigation of forehead lines and periorbital fine wrinkles, and in improving lip shape and fullness and the overall appearance of aging skin. These effects did not regress during a 2-week cessation of application. Beneficial trends were noted in the appearance of coarse wrinkles, under-eye dark circles, nasolabial folds, sagging neck skin, and neck firmness."
A major factor in the appearance of aging is tissue loss, and DMAE has been shown instudies to increase epidermal thickness; it also has improved skin firmness. One reviewsummarized the topical benefits of DMAE as "a potential anti-inflammatory effect and a documented increase in skin firmness with possible improvement in underlying facial muscle tone."
Our DMAE Restorative Cream is packed with nutrients for the best skin possible: in addition to DMAE, it has Vitamin C ester, glycolic acid, and alpha lipoic acid. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals on the skin. It also stabilizes collagen synthesis and de-pigments melanin formation (such as age spots). Glycolic acid mediates the severity of photo damage, as a Boston study found. Seventy four participants using a 5% glycolic acid treatment for 22 weeks had significantly less severity of photo damage and sallowness. Just 5% alpha lipoic acid has also been reported to help with lines from photoaging.
