Childhood Obesity Under Age 2

Childhood Obesity Under Age 2

The Childhood Obesity Foundation reports that in 2013, 42 million children and infants were overweight or obese. Obesity puts children at an increased risk for health complications and the premature onset of other health conditions. Similarly, the Canadian Obesity Network estimates that currently, one in four adult Canadians and one in ten children are clinically obese. As obesity is a factor in diseases such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and cancer, it is crucial to maintain a healthy weight--especially for children. CMAJ reports that obesity has more than doubled since the 1970s, with a total of 32% of children being classified as overweight or obese. Since the 90's, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity, and an estimated 60 million children worldwide will be obese by 2020. CMAJ states that intervention may be needed as early as infancy to stem the tide of obesity.

The root cause of obesity and disease is undernutrition: eating food without nutritional value. A healthy diet is crucial to fight obesity--plenty of fruit and vegetables, with no GMO manufactured food. Avoiding processed food altogether can give a family a great start to better eating.

Activity is also important. Participation rates for sports are declining, and this is why it is so important to be active as a family. Parents who are involved in local sports--even as spectators--boost the activity rate for their children. If both parents are active, the rate is improved even more.

Last year, Global reported that obesity rates in children are slowly starting to decline, but we must be diligent to ensure this trend continues. Supplements can help maintain this progress.
