What Does the Term "Fragrance" Mean in Cosmetics?

The word "fragrance" has become a loaded term, especially among natural product enthusiasts. Products that have a smell must obtain it somehow, and the devil is in the details.

What is the risk in a fragrance? Most
fragrances are made of chemicals--or more likely, a combination of many chemicals. Usually, these chemicals are not tested for toxicity, either alone or in their various combinations. They can trigger allergies, migraines, and even asthma symptoms.

As of 2006, Canadian companies are required to
state cosmetic ingredients on product labels. While a step in the right direction, these ingredients do not have to disclose everything. Byproducts of certain ingredients, such as the preservative formaldehyde, do not have to be disclosed. Similarly, fragrance recipes are considered proprietary, so the specific chemical combination does not have to be disclosed.

In a few of our products, such as our DMAE Restorative Cream, we have "fragrance" listed on the label. However, a "fragrance" from Life Choice is not the same as a "fragrance" from a generic perfume.

In our case, "fragrance" does not mean a mystery chemical cocktail. In DMAE Restorative Cream, for instance, the lemon fragrance is derived from lemon balm. In ancient times, the
herb was used in homes and churches as a sort of potpourri. It also had numerous medicinal properties, prompting physician and alchemist Paracelsus to call it "the elixir of life."

Topically, lemon balm penetrates the skin well and offers protection against UV skin damage. It is also a potent antioxidant. With its dual purpose--a beautiful light scent and a powerful healing agent--we intentionally chose lemon balm for DMAE Cream. We will begin listing this on our labels and advertising in the interest of full transparency.

If the source of a fragrance is not stated, it is always safest to ask. Just because manufacturers do not have to list these details on their labels, it does not mean they should not somehow be made available. At Life Choice, we care about consumer safety, and any reasonable information we can provide for customer education, we will.

School: Focus without Stress

Summer is winding down, which means it's almost time for a new school year to start. Life Choice has you covered with products to provide focus without stress!

L-Tyrosine: The students' edge… did you know that when taking Life Choice L-Tyrosine one hour prior to writing an examination, stress due to anxiety is drastically reduced and the ability to better focus is increased? As
Livestrong reports, tyrosine is responsible for the production of the brain neurotransmitters norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine. Norepinephrine enables concentration. Epinephrine is better known as adrenaline; it provides extra blood to the brain and muscles, which also produces energy, especially in times of stress. Dopamine provides the mental tools needed to deal with daily stresses. As any student could testify, all 3 of these neurotransmitters come into play when studying!

DMAE--Lights On!: In one
study, conducted by Dr. Carl Pfeiffer of the Brain-Bio Center, 25 girls and 83 boys were studied. DMAE was found to result in enhanced behavior in 2/3 of the boys and 3/4 of the girls. Hyperactivity was greatly lessened as attention span was lengthened, irritability was decreased, scholastic ability improved, and, in some cases, IQ was elevated. Another double-blind study supplemented 74 children who had learning disorders (many hyperactive) with 500 mg DMAE for 3 months. They were then tested for behaviour, reaction time, and put through a series of standard psychometric parameters. There was not only general improvement, but also performance improvement in the children with learning and behaviour disorders.

These products can be helpful for all ages--from children to parents! If you're feeling scattered and stressed out, try DMAE and Tyrosine today!

My name is Kinga Hegedűs and I’m a student at the University of Szeged in Hungary. I’m studying Biology and my wish is to become a scientist. This is the path I’ve chosen and I know that it won’t be easy. It’s a hard and stressful path. But I have to fight for my dream. In this fight Doctor's Choice products are helping me a lot. As a biology student it is important for me what kind of products I’m using to keep myself fit and calm during exams. I prefer natural products. I chose Doctor's Choice because of the natural origin and the free form of the molecules they offer. I’ve learned and read about these compounds. I know them. I’m happy that we can use nature’s gifts. They are safe, no side effects or dependence. This is what our body needs. I personally use two products: L-Tyrosine and DMAE. When I have to study a lot and the time is short, or on the exam day, when I must be fit, I take DMAE. I know that DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol bitartate) is a precursor to acetyl-choline, our key neurotransmitter, and that means that my brain is working better when I take it. But my biggest problem is stress. Under stress I can’t do anything, I can’t study or remember the stuff I learned and I have a horrible belly-ache. Thanks to Doctor's Choice’s L-Tyrosine it’s a thing of the past. Without these products I can’t imagine how my university years would be. Terrible and more difficult, I think. Sometimes when I learn a lot, I just can’t sleep. I solve this problem with Doctor's Choice’s Melatonin. I know that this product is good for my body too, because it’s a hormone that’s part of the normal human sleep-wake cycle. I’m very thankful to the Doctor's Choice Company for taking care of our health!

Farmer's Markets: You Need to Be Vigilant and Ask the Source

Farmer's Markets: You Need to Be Vigilant and Ask the Source

One of the great things about summer is buying fresh produce from the farmer's markets, supporting local farmers and buying what is thought to be higher quality produce without herbicides and pesticides.

I am sure each region is the same as one area stands out as being the best for produce. For the best fresh corn in the west, it is either Chilliwack in BC or Taber in Alberta. A line was forming for Taber corn and I stood in queue. Most were buying by the dozen, for who can eat just one cob, right? When it came my turn, the lady said,"Hello, will it be 6 or 12?" I said,"I would like 12, but before I buy them, I have a question to ask: are these grown without GMO seeds?" She looked me straight in the eyes and said, “All corn being sold here today at each of the vendors is from GMO crops. You will be very hard pressed to find any farmer growing without. Even if they say they aren’t, they are because of the government incentives."

And she was right. The Canadian
government has produced a video in order to fight the anti-GMO movement

Visiting farmer's markets are still a great joy, but now we must not take these natural ventures for granted. We need to begin asking questions about how the product was grown, or why else would you pay a premium for what you can buy cheaper in your local grocery store?

Now is the time to make a difference and to voice your concerns. If we don’t, the seduction of GMO-engineered crops will take a firm hold into everything we eat. If you don’t want GMO’s, don’t buy GMO’s; your purchasing power can make the difference. If you continue to buy GMO-produced foods knowing that they may be damaging your family's health, who’s fault will it be when the truth becomes publicly known?

I do feel for the farmers, and the enticement of government incentives. It means more money in their pockets, but what will it cost us concerning our health in the long run?

According to Canadian Biotechnology Action network (CBAN) you can
ask the following questions (keeping in mind that the farmer may not be aware he/she has purchased GMO seeds):
  • Is your sweet corn genetically modified (also called genetically engineered)?
  • Is it “insect protected”? (This is how insect resistant GM corn is described in seed catalogues)
  • Is it herbicide tolerant? Did you use Roundup or Liberty on your corn? Is it called “LibertyLink” or “Roundup Ready”?
  • Did you sign a Technology Stewardship Agreement for this sweet corn?
  • What is the name of the variety of sweet corn you planted?
  • What company makes this sweet corn?
  • What company or seed dealer did you buy from?

The Health Dangers of Using Anti-Depressant "SSRI" Medication

The Health Dangers of Using Anti-Depressant "SSRI" Medication

SSRIs may be common prescriptions for depression, but this does not mean they are safe.

Documentarian Katinka Newman
shared her experience with The Daily Mail. After her divorce and subsequent move, Newman began self-medicating with alcohol and sleeping pills to cope. Impatient for relief, she consulted with a psychiatrist and received a prescription for escitalopram (Prozac). After taking the first pill, Newman says she increasingly became "a self-harming, hallucinating, suicidal wreck." Various physicians she visited believed the side effects were symptoms of her condition and not the medication, so they would try new drugs. Within a year, Newman was on 5 drugs, including antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. After realizing she did not want to continue on in such a bad state, Newman went to a private hospital, where she was taken off all SSRI's. Despite having severe withdrawal symptoms initially, she began to feel better as the drugs left her system.

Selma Eikelenboom, medical director at Independent Forensic Services in Colorado, has a theory as to why SSRI's can turn certain people into timebombs. According to Newman, "[Eikelenboom] believes a lot of people who react badly to antidepressants have a particular gene mutation (called a polymorphism) which means their bodies are unable to break down the drugs. Instead they become toxic . . . Dr Eikelenboom has used her test on a number of people who have killed while on antidepressants, including the ‘Batman killer’, James Holmes. She reports that mutations on four of Holmes’s genes mean that he could not metabolise the SSRI antidepressant Zoloft he was given."

Eikelenboom also tested Newman and found that she could not process SSRI's, either.

The mind-altering effects of SSRI's have been
implicated in several crimes. However, even in assuming the best-case scenario, SSRI's may not be worth the trouble. The FDA has issued warnings, and even Psychology Today published an article citing 5 reasons to avoid SSRI's. Those reasons were:
  1. An AMA study found that they are no more effective than placebos.
  2. MedPage Today found a study from Columbia University and Johns Hopkins stating that doctors usually prescribe multiple SSRI's and other psychopharmacological drugs, despite no strong studies supporting such dosing.
  3. Formerly common issues such as shyness, abnormal sex drive, and sadness are now being classified as "diseases." If these "diseases" happen to respond to medication, more prescriptions will be given, perpetuating the cycle.
  4. Overmedication is already a grave problem, and SSRI's are major contributors to that problem.
  5. There is no scientific benchmark for "normal" serotonin levels; what is abnormal for one person may be normal for another.
SSRI's are effectively a game of Russian Roulette. Meanwhile, natural products like Kava have been found to be very helpful for both anxiety and depression.

Why run the risks inherent in SSRI's when a safe and natural healing alternative is available with supportive clinical evidence? Isn’t it time we looked to what nature has provided instead of prescribing harmful SSRI medication with life-changing consequences? Follow the science and discover Life Choice®.
