HRT Alternatives

In the last couple of years, news stories surrounding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have brought to light just how risky it can be. The best-known pharmaceuticals in this category are Premarin and Premplus. Premarin contains the equine estrogen hormone, which is extracted from pregnant mare urine. Premplus is similar, but also contains progestin in a single medication.

As of 2013, U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer had paid $1.7 billion USD to settle almost all 10,000 lawsuits the company had received over HRT drugs. The settlements claimed the drugs had contributed to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, stroke, and heart disease. In 2004, a Canadian lawsuit was filed by Dianna Stanway, claiming that Premarin and progestin had caused breast cancer. Hundreds more joined the suit, and in 2015, Wyeth Canada (a subsidiary of Pfizer) paid out $13 million to the victims. After 2004, Health Canada changed the warnings for the product to include side effects such as coronary heart disease, gynecologic cancers, breast cancer and dementia.

For many women, the risks outweigh any benefit. In 2002, almost 18 per cent of Canadian women aged 50-69 were taking the drugs; by 2004, after the U.S. government-funded Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) results were published, that rate had dropped to less than five per cent.

While many may feel stuck between harmful pharmaceuticals and the harsh realities of non-medicated menopause, natural alternatives are available. Doctor's Choice Progest Liposome Cream is an excellent option to help balance the female hormones during the different phases of the cycles of life, from menstruation to menopause. With non-GMO soy isoflavones, clover leaf extract, and chastetree berry, Progest Liposome Cream is a great alternative for natural hormone balance. For those who prefer capsules to creams, our Balanced Female capsules contain these ingredients, plus many more, such as black cohosh root, false licorice root, and dong quai root. For maximum efficacy, we recommend using both products.

Supplements for Times of Stress

Although it is not receiving as much global attention as previously, the fires at Fort McMurray are still burning. Pushing north, the fires reached a large oil-sands work camp, the Blacksands Executive Lodge, as of May 17.

First, we would like to offer heartfelt condolences to those from Ft. McMurray and area who have suffered and are still suffering such great losses. We have some great customers in that area, as well, and they are especially on our minds at this time.

While those who were exposed to the fires may not have been able to keep the flames from affecting their possessions, they can still safeguard a crucial aspect of life: health.

As Environment Canada has issued
warnings for very poor air quality, supplementing is more important now than ever--especially for those in Northern Alberta. In that sense, it is timely that our new B Complex will be releasing soon.

Doctor's Choice® B Complex is a completely vegan, non-GMO, organic plant-based B-Complex, with the world’s only Vegetarian Society and Vegan Society registered Vitamin D-3 (others are from fish oils or from sheep’s wool). It has added B-12 (methylcobalamin), Biotin and PABA in a proprietary blend of spinach, blueberry, turmeric and ginger, all sourced organically.

Our B Complex is formulated to help with a host of conditions, including stress management and brain health. In 2011, a
study examined the effects of a high-dose B complex on 60 participants over the course of 3 months. The participants, previously experiencing chronic work stress, reported that after 12 weeks of supplementation, they experienced "significantly lower personal strain and a reduction in confusion and depressed/dejected mood."

Overall brain health can also be positively effected from Vitamin B. High levels of homocysteine in the brain can contribute to brain atrophy, and
studies have found that increased vitamin B intake can reduce plasma homocysteine--in fact, one study found that homocysteine was reduced in the specific brain regions most prone to Alzheimer's development.

As an added help for stress, we recommend GABA. Research done at The Pain & Stress Therapy Centre in San Antonio Texas has shown pure GABA 750 mg can mimic the tranquillizing effects of Valium or Librium without the possibility of addiction or fear of being sedated. GABA fills the receptors in the brain and feeds the brain what should be there. Pure GABA dissolves in water; it is tasteless, odorless, and the calming results occur within 10 to 12 minutes.

Flow Agent Changes

We at Doctor's Choice have some exciting news for our customers: we are now in the process of changing our flow agent for encapsulation. This is important because fillers can be toxic--especially in tablet form supplements. While vegetarian capsules, such as the ones we use, are far less likely to have these issues, we are on a constant quest for quality improvement, and we feel this is the next step.

Here is a partial
list from "1992 Excipient Usage In Marketed Drugs, USA" of common supplement fillers:
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Lactose
  • Starch (Corn)
  • Microcrystalline Cellulose
  • Silicon Dioxide
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Sodium Starch
  • Glycolate
  • Gelatin
  • Talc
  • Sucrose
  • Povidone
  • Pregelatinized Starch
  • Hydroxy Propyl Methylcellulose
  • OPA Products
  • Croscarmellose
  • Calcium phosphate
  • Hydroxy Propyl Cellulose
  • Ethylcellulose
  • Crospovidone
  • Shellac
  • Calcium Stearate
Another additive is Propylene Glycol, a popular antifreeze commonly used in windshield washer fluid and brake/hydraulic fluid. Commonly used in cosmetics, lotions, and shampoos, it has been known to cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are also commonly used in shampoos (enabling them to enter the bloodstream), as well as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps.

Some additives have been found in plaque deposits from coronary artery disease, indicating that some supplements may actually be exacerbating such problems instead of helping them.

In
vaccines, Polysorbate 80 is a common emulsifier that can negatively affect the immune system. In fact, due to the number of vaccinations given to children, they can become toxic within as little as 6 months. Dr. J. Bart Classen referred to this as "immune overload."

Most companies use magnesium stearate in their supplements; we have not used MS for several years. While it is on some of our older labels, it is no longer used in production, and our new labels reflect this change.

Most of our products do not need a flow agent, but in case of doubt, we add the ingredient onto our labels; this is not required, but it is done in the spirit of full transparency in case the need were to arise with fluffy material. We are currently working to have all flow agents replaced by fat soluble vitamin C, ascorbal palmitate. It is an added expense we will absorb, but this will now eliminate any doubt or concern of neuronal interference.

Probiotics for Vaginal Yeast Infection and Fertility Anti

As the Mayo Clinic states, yeast infections are caused by the candida fungus. While some candida is normal, when candida growth becomes uncontrolled, yeast infections occur.

Some common causes of yeast infections may include:
  • Antibiotics
  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes
  • Lowered immune system
  • Hormone therapy, including oral contraceptives
Douching is also a bad idea, as it removes the normal bacterial flora in the vagina.

Yeast infections can also interfere with healthy fertility. The two pathogens actually invade together. When this happens, the inner vagina gets inflamed and becomes a very inhospitable environment for sperm before they reach the female egg, thus leading to infertility.

Normally, Lactobacillus bacteria, such as the bacteria in our Laktokhan probiotic, curb candida growth. This is why the strains present in Laktokhan can be helpful in curbing yeast infections. Probiotics are normally taken orally but they can also be used as vaginal suppositories to locally re-establish the balance of bacteria--studies have been performed on the strains found in Laktokhan. In one
study, 93% of women who received L gasseri LN40Lactobacillus fermentum LN99L. casei subsp. rhamnosus LN113 and P. acidilactici LN23 vaginally for 5 days were cured of their issues with in 2-3 days. Probiotics prevent the colonization of the vagina with yeast and harmful bacteria. After any antibiotic treatment, It is a good idea to replenish the vagina with good bacteria.

As previously seen, Laktokhan is also important for mental health. Because probiotics are anti-inflammatory, they may not only be helping the stomach, but also the brain. A study conducted at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario, found that when mice were depleted of healthy gut bacteria, they became depressed and anxious. When given a probiotic, however, anxiety-reducing chemicals flooded their brains, leading to an improved disposition in the mice.

Taking a cue from these findings, another study at the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto
examined whether probiotics could be used to treat bipolar disorder.

Dr. John Bienenstock, director of the Brain-Body Institute at St. Joseph’s, stated, “Psychiatry may well find that there are many factors in the intestines that promote the expression of anxiety, depression, and so on, so looking inside the brain only is not the only way of looking at things. This is a revolution in itself.”

Laktokhan contains all the crucial strains for your body's needs. Probiotics are crucial to many aspects of life; for the best probiotic, trust Laktokhan.
