Life Choice Is 30!

In the early 1980s, Eldon Dahl owned a health food store, and he was so intrigued by the healing potential of natural products that he went back to school to become a naturopathic doctor, graduating in 1988. His skill as a physician was enhanced by his depth of interest in the immune system and the correlation between its decline and disease. Attending a conference on anti-aging sparked in him the desire to research ways of preserving our youthful faculties and led him to conduct anti-aging research on friends, neighbours, and other volunteers. His clinical studies, using dosage levels unheard of in conventional medicine, focused on reducing lipofuscin within cell membranes, as well as oxidation within the brain, using increased doses of antioxidants.

By April 1986, Eldon was formulating original remedies--hand-filling capsules for friends and relatives, and later for his patients, because there were no adequate products available to treat them. This was the beginning of Life Choice.

The company’s original commitment remains unchanged today: to provide consumers with a professional line of nutraceutical medicine of the finest quality. To be a leader in this industry, the active ingredients and raw materials used in the manufacturing of the natural based nutritional medicines, body care products, cosmetics, and homeopathic remedies must meet strict industrial and government regulatory standards. All Life Choice® products are fully compliant with Health Canada’s Natural Health Products Directorate. Each ingredient is of the highest USP (United States Pharmacopeia) pharmaceutical grade, and when possible, patented and organic. Purity and quality control are of prime importance to the company when it first opened and they continue to be key to the company’s success today.

Dahl says, “It is the uniqueness of our formulations that makes us stand apart from other manufacturers. We assure the health-conscious public the best possible access to the health care they want and deserve.”

It has been a great mission making this dream a reality, and we hope to continue providing top-notch nutraceuticals to our customers for many years to come.

The Laktokhan Difference

Our best-selling Laktokhan is different from other products on the market--even the name indicates what sets the product apart from the rest. Lacto comes from the word Lactobacillus, meaning "strain," and khan meaning "great." When combined, Lactokhan means "great/good bacteria."

Our Laktokhan contains 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) of four human strains of “friendly” intestinal microflora: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Bifidobacterium longum. These friendly bacteria help keep harmful bacteria from multiplying in our intestines. Antibiotics can kill off healthy bacteria and lead to weakened immunity and intestinal disorders. Laktokhan restores the balance of good bacteria, thus helping to normalize digestive function and boost immunity. New research is showing that gut microbiota may influence both local and systemic inflammation. Inflammation contributes to development, progression, and treatment of cancer. It is believed that a proper balance of healthy gut bacteria may reduce cancer development. A 2013
study concluded that "optimal responses to cancer therapy require an intact commensal microbiota that mediates its effects by modulating myeloid-derived cell functions in the tumor microenvironment. These findings underscore the importance of the microbiota in the outcome of disease treatment."

Another feature of Laktokhan is our packaging. Oxidization kills live bacterial cultures. Oxidization begins to occur the moment the probiotic is exposed to oxygen; when the product is first opened, all capsules begin to lose their potency. To prevent this from happening, each Laktokhan capsule is blister packed individually and hermetically sealed to keep out oxygen: when one capsule is taken, the others remain fully active, no matter the time difference between dosing. It is shelf stable with full potency for 3 years, and if kept out of direct tropical sunlight, Laktokhan is fully active up to 30+ Celsius, which makes it the perfect travel companion.

While human strains are the best strains, not all human strains are equal. The microflora in our GI tract is a very complex community. Human sourced probiotics are adapted to the gut environment. They are genetically mutated to adapt in the human gut environment due to the changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental toxins.
We have learned from science that the adaptation process evolves continuously during one's lifetime due to many environmental factors, such as climate changes, lifestyle, and nutrition.

What would be more beneficial: an aged 40-year-old adult human bacteria strain with less toxins, or a modern day strain for added bacterial resistance? It is our belief that modern stains provide a better defense, for they develop antibodies that work to fight the pathogens that are created in today's society. If we were to use a 40-year-old strain, it would not have the same antibodies that society's gastrointestinal system has today. It may be more pure in nature, but immunity is built on creating new antibody strains. The same logic is used when antibiotics, vaccines, and viruses are prepared: genetic pathogens have the ability to change their DNA, and antibiotics are created for immune defense. In reality, no new antibiotics have been created for some time; unfortunately,
resistance has eventually been seen to nearly all antibiotics that have been developed. This is why only new bacterial strains have the ability to create antibodies for today's environment.

Most of the strains in Laktokhan can survive intestinal acid and bile, and they implant themselves on specific intestinal receptors, thus contributing to a longer-lasting, consistently beneficial effect. Laktokhan also contains the prebiotic inulin, feeding only the beneficial bacteria, not the harmful organisms. Probiotics are live bacteria and in order for them to continue living they need to feed, and they do on prebiotics mixed with the probiotics. There are mainly two prebiotics on the market, FOS and Inulin. We use Inulin.

In one
study, hamsters were fed semipurified diets containing 20 g/100 g fat, 0.12 g/100 g cholesterol and 0 (control), 8, 12 or 16% inulin for 5 weeks. At the end of that time, researchers found that plasma total cholesterol concentrations were significantly lowered by 18, 15 and 29% in hamsters fed 8, 12 and 16% inulin, respectively.

By maintaining a balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria, Laktokhan helps to manage acute infectious diarrhea and reduces the frequency of gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhea and nausea, during antibiotic use.

Generally, probiotics are known for their digestion abilities, but not as much for their immunity properties. However, Laktokhan probiotics are not just for healthy digestion. Studies have shown that people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes have high levels of pathogens in their intestines. This hostile environment can also reduce sensitivity to medication. When probiotics build up good intestinal bacteria, however, pathogens have a harder time sticking to the intestines. The immune system improves and is able to produce needed nutrients. In another study, students who had colds and were supplemented with 1 billion CFUs experienced their symptoms for 4 days, versus 6 days with the placebo group.

Diabetes: UN World Health Day

UN World Health Day: Diabetes

For World Health Day 2016, WHO released its first global report on diabetes. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said that diabetes was chosen as this year's theme for many reasons, but mainly because the prevalence of diabetes is alarming, and worldwide statistics are rapidly getting worse.

As the UN
article states, "Even though we have the tools to prevent and treat it, diabetes now causes some 1.5 million deaths a year. High blood glucose causes an additional 2.2 million deaths." In its global report, WHO also found that in 2012, "a total of 3·7 million deaths were attributable to higher-than-optimal blood glucose levels."

Diabetes risk may be managed through healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise, and a healthy (organic, non-GMO) diet. However, unhealthy glucose levels are the first marker on the path to diabetes, and those may not always be manageable through lifestyle alone.

The amino acid L-Glycine has shown promise in studies for managing glucose levels.

In 2008, the
Journal of Endocrinological Investigation released a study on glycine's effect on inflammation in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Seventy four patients took either 5g/day of glycine or 5g/day of placebo for 3 months. When that time had passed, the glycine group had a 38% reduction in inflammation, while the placebo group had an inflammation increase of up to 43%.

Another study was released by the journal
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiologytesting the effects of glycine on diabetic rats, though taurine was also included. After 6 months of treatment, the glycine and taurine treated rats had significantly lower concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and glycated hemoglobin than the diabetic control rats.

Glycine can also be helpful for degenerative diseases like Motor Neuron Disease (MND). Plasma amino acid levels were
measured in 43 MND patients after glycine loading. After 4 hours, plasma and cerebrospinal fluid glycine levels remained significantly higher than the control group. The researchers concluded that MND may be tied to a glycine storage defect in the central nervous system. We have the study showing muscle spasticity; glycine is reduced by 30% in the spinal cord, affecting nerve impulses.

As you can see, glycine could be an important piece of the puzzle for controlling the diabetes epidemic. While it is not currently available in Doctor's Choice, Life Choice L-Glycine is still the highest pharmaceutical grade--free form, and fermented. If you are living a healthy lifestyle, but have been struggling to keep your glucose under control, try L-Glycine!

April Is Stress Month: Tryptophan For Stress

Tryptophan for Stress

For a balanced mood, L-Tryptophan is a key component to have in your supplement arsenal. Tryptophan also helps combat depression and insomnia and to stabilize moods. It helps to control hyperactivity in children, alleviate stress, benefit the heart, aid in weight control as an appetite suppressant, and enhance the release of growth hormone. B-6 (P5P) is necessary for the formation of tryptophan, which is required for the formation of serotonin; Doctor's Choice uses P5P because it crosses the blood-brain barrier. A lack of tryptophan and magnesium may contribute to coronary artery spasms or irregular heartbeats; supplementation can conceivably reduce heart attacks.

In 2001, a
meta-analysis was performed by the British Journal of Psychiatry. Researchers studied the effects of tryptophan depletion on mental health. In subjects who were healthy, the study found that a lack of tryptophan lowered mood, increased aggression, and impaired memory. In patients who had depression and had found relief with antidepressants, tryptophan depletion caused a relapse; similar results were found in those with panic disorders.

L-tryptophan does not work by drugging or depressing the central nervous system. L-tryptophan simply returns normal function by being available for the body to use as needed. Although tryptophan is found in foods, such as brown rice, cottage cheese, turkey, peanuts, and soy protein, the best way is supplementation, since this is the only way to cross the blood-brain barrier for absorption in any noticeable amount. High protein meals can depress the brain levels of L-tryptophan since they compete with various other amino acids for uptake.

Tryptophan is too important to be without! Doctor's Choice Tryptophan is vegan, fermented, and non-GMO! Try it today!

Weight Loss Supplements: Unnatural Destructive Trends

Unnatural Destructive Trends

A new study released by the University of Toulouse in France found that over half of weight loss supplements are spiked with pharmaceuticals.

Using pharmaceutical ingredients in natural products is banned in Europe. In some cases, the ingredients "spiking" the supplements had been banned not only from natural products, but also from pharmaceutical products, as well. The majority of the spiked samples were purchased online, and levels of the pharmaceutical substances varied with each capsule.

The final results? "Among the 164 samples analysed, only 44% were either truly natural or with a composition conform to the label."

Several expressed concern over this phenomena, including Dr. Luca Bucchini, managing director of Italian firm Hylobates Consulting, who stated, "These problems continue to come up for two reasons. First, a minority of manufacturers and brands look for efficacy, without too many questions asked; ingredient suppliers are keen to find a solution which works, meaning often adulteration or substitution with a pharmaceutical principle. Second, a minority of ingredient suppliers and manufacturers do not have quality control programs in place, and contamination - at low levels - creeps in along the contamination."

Unfortunately, the trend of deceitful supplement labelling does not seem to be going away. Just last year in the US, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced that his office sent letters to four major retailers for allegedly selling store brand herbal supplement products in New York that either could not be verified to contain the labeled substance, or which were found to contain ingredients not listed on the labels. In that case, DNA testing allegedly showed that just 21% of the test results from store brand herbal supplements verified DNA from the plants listed on the products’ labels — with 79% coming up empty for DNA related to the labeled content or verifying contamination with other plant material.

When a company tries to enter the market with cheap raw material that is ineffective, the only possible way for results to be noticeable is by spiking the product with potent prescription drugs or completely different substances, risking a host of side effects--all sold under the illusion of being legitimate and natural. This is total deception from the first thought process to the finished product. We feel sorry for the deceived end users. They spend good money to become healthier and they are being poisoned with illegitimate health products. The public must protest these illegal actions and refuse to deal with unscrupulous companies; it is time to raise the bar concerning nutraceutical (product) quality standards so that these spiking issues are stopped, and the consumer can buy from their local health food store with confidence.

With Doctor's Choice, we don't play these games: what you see on the label is what you get in the bottle. All our raw materials are purchased based on the purest possible USP pharmaceutical grade, and they offer true therapeutic results.
